Here are some tips for identifying premium vinyl siding.
The Profile of Premium
The profile of premium vinyl siding considers the extent to which the vinyl protrudes outward to resemble a clapboard. Having a “deeper profile” simply means the siding protrudes more. A deeper profile, such as ¾” is considered premium. The deeper profile, Consumer Reports found, that the deeper the protrusion, the less likely it is that the siding will look wavy after it is installed which is a significant advantage of premium vs. value vinyl siding.
Hang On–It’s Windy Out There!
In order to receive certification from the Vinyl Siding Institute, siding must withstand a simulated 90-mph wind load. Consumer Reports found that the models that performed best had a “double-hem mounting area.” The double hem mounts to the house more tightly and stays flatter for a longer duration of time.
Color at a Premium
When considering the benefits of vinyl it is noteworthy to mention that all colors are integrated when the vinyl is extruded making scratches unnoticeable; because of this process, the fade factor is negligible, although darker colors require a layer of UV coating to maintain the integrity of the color.
